Breast Ultrasound

Breast ultrasound is used as an adjunct to mammography in the same fashion that MRI complements mammography. A breast ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive exam that uses sound waves to see the inside of the breast and does not have any radiation.

Breast ultrasound is often performed in conjunction with diagnostic mammography and may be recommended for patients with breast implants since ultrasound can distinguish between solid and fluid-filled lumps (cysts). Cysts are very common and completely benign; about half of all women have some cysts in their breasts at some point.

Common ultrasound Studies also Include: Abdomen, Thyroid, Liver, Kidney, Pelvis, Scrotum, Venous Duplex, Arterial studies

What are the Indications for Breast Ultrasound?

The most common indication for breast ultrasound is a palpable finding, meaning something that is found by you or your physician on a physical exam, such as a lump or bump. It is also used for masses, distortion, or unequal breast tissue (asymmetries) seen on mammography. Ultrasound may also be helpful following an MRI if an abnormality needs to be biopsied. Ultrasound may also be used as a guidance modality in performing minimally invasive breast biopsy.
