The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends annual lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography (CT) in people who meet all of these criteria:
- Are ages 50 to 80 years.
- Have a 20 pack-year smoking history.
- Currently smoke cigarettes or quit within the past 15 years.
The low-dose lung screening is a non-invasive CT scan that can detect abnormalities and lung cancer in its earlier, more treatable stages using 75% less radiation than a traditional CT scan. It is far more accurate in finding lung tumors than a standard chest x-ray. Low-dose CT scans take very detailed, 3-D pictures of your lungs and can find lung cancers when they are as small as the diameter of a soda straw, as compared with a chest x-ray that finds them when they are about the size of a quarter.
