A CT scan or CAT scan is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce cross-sectional images (often called “slices”) of the body. A CT scan shows two-dimensional and three-dimensional detailed images of any anatomy, including the bones, muscles, fat, blood vessels and organs.
CT scans may be performed with or without contrast. “Contrast” refers to a substance taken by mouth or injected into an intravenous (IV) line that causes the select organ or tissue under study to be seen more clearly. Contrast examinations require special preparation.

Most CT exams must be ordered by a physician or advanced practice provider. The provider who ordered your scan will receive the results, typically within 3 business days.
Siemens 128 Slice CT
Our Rocky Hill office features the Siemens Drive 128 slice CT scanner, this dual-source scanner is one of only two in its class currently available in the state of Connecticut.
The scanner uses two x-ray sources at right angles to each other, this effectively makes it twice as fast, improves image quality and results in less radiation exposure to the patient. The scanners’ large bore accommodates a wide range of patients up to 550 pounds and the patient exam experience is enhanced by no breath-holding, reduced need for beta blockers and low dose of contrast media.
Our Rocky Hill outpatient center is a joint venture with St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, an affiliate of Trinity Health of New England.
Siemens 64-slice CT
The Siemens SOMOTOM 64-slice CT at RAH is one of the most advanced CT scanners available. It delivers outstanding accuracy with fast scan times and with lower radiation exposure than other CT scanners. It’s ideal for preventive imaging tests like lung screening and calcium score (heart scan) and can accommodate patients up to 676 pounds.
