3D Mammography Services

3D mammography, or Tomosynthesis, is the standard of care for screening mammography. Unlike 2D mammography, which only shows breast tissue in one flat image, 3D images make it possible for a radiologist to see your breast tissue in one-millimeter thin slices, providing greater detail for better detection. The 3D mammogram’s ability to visibly produce fine details decreases the need for follow-up/diagnostic images because the radiologist can see the breast tissue more clearly.

Screening Mammography

In Connecticut, screening mammography is legislated to be covered by insurance companies.

The American College of Radiology (ACR), the Society of Breast Imaging and other medical associations recommend annual screening mammograms starting at age 40. Screening mammography is appropriate for all women, even those without symptoms, such as breast tenderness or a lump, and those with no family history of cancer.

If you are at high risk for breast cancer (if your mother or sister had breast cancer before the age of 50), then you should talk with your doctor and consider beginning screening with mammography at a younger age and/or with supplemental methods.

For your comfort, Radiology Associates of Hartford offers Hologic SmartCurve mammography paddles at all our locations. The revolutionary design provides a curved compression surface instead of a flat one while producing the same high-quality mammogram images as the traditional flat surface. Getting a mammogram at Radiology Associates of Hartford is a lot more comfortable!

By providing a more comfortable experience, RAH aims to increase the number of women who follow recommendations for annual screening mammography exams and improve the health of our community.

Radiology Associates of Hartford is a digital mammogram and accredited breast imaging facility; a distinction awarded only to an elite group of healthcare facilities. In addition, at RAH we employ technologists who are registered and have completed specialized certification in mammography.

Prepare for your Mammogram Appointment

  • Provide the date and location of your last mammogram.
  • If you experience breast tenderness prior to or during menstruation, try to schedule your annual mammogram at a more comfortable time during your cycle.
  • On the day of your exam do not apply any powers, deodorant or ointments to the underarm or breast area as these can interfere with test results.
  • Wear a two-piece outfit, if possible, this will allow you to wear a gown from the waist up.
  • Bring your photo ID and your medical insurance card.

Diagnostic 3D Mammography

A diagnostic mammogram, or a combination of imaging exams, including breast ultrasound and/or MRI, may be ordered by your doctor if you have signs or symptoms or when further evaluation of the breast tissue is needed for an area of concern found on your screening mammogram.

How is a Diagnostic Mammogram Different from a Screening Mammogram?

A diagnostic mammogram is intended for women who have signs or symptoms such as a lump, mass or nipple discharge mammogram – this is a difference between your annual screening mammogram and a diagnostic mammogram. Diagnostic mammograms are also used as a next step exam for additional views, sometimes referred to as a call-back, to further evaluate any unclear area or abnormality detected on an annual screening mammogram.

At Radiology Associates of Hartford, a diagnostic mammogram is done under the direct supervision of one of our board-certified radiologists at all our outpatient imaging centers. Special views of the breast will be taken to analyze your breast tissue or further analyze findings from the screening mammogram. Following your exam your technologist or one of our radiologists will meet with you to discuss the results. In many cases, a breast ultrasound will also be ordered to provide additional diagnostic information.

What happens if they find something in my breast?

Occasionally we find a lesion that requires a breast biopsy to learn more about the area of concern seen on the mammogram or other imaging method. Fortunately, the vast majority of breast biopsies can be accurately performed with a needle and do not require surgery. Radiology Associates of Hartford performs Breast Biopsy services in our outpatient centers.

Diagnostic Mammography Results:

  • Most women who receive a call-back for a diagnostic mammogram will have a normal repeat exam and can return to their annual screening schedule.
  • A small percentage will be recommended to have an early six-month screening follow-up.
  • An even smaller percentage will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
At RAH, about 7–10% of women are called back for additional diagnostic views.
